Zinnowitz is first mentioned in a document dated 1309. In those days it was only one of several farming and fishing villages on the island of Usedom. Today it is a popular and attractive seaside resort bearing comparison with any other holiday resort along the coastline of the Baltic sea.

Zinnowitz lies on a narrow strip of land between the Baltic Sea and a lake called Achterwasser which is in fact a large indentation of the river Peene. Half an hour walk will take you from the beach to the small harbour on the lake Achterwasser.

The place´s development from a farming and fishing village to a seaside resort started in the second half of the ninenteenth century. A lot of elegant and beautiful houses erected in historicist and art noveau style 100 years ago have been preserved and continue testifying to wealth and luxury of ancient holidaymakers at Zinnowitz. There is also a huge hotel near the beach which cannot escape anyone´s notice. It was built during the communist era bearing the name Red October in past times.

Like any other place on Usedom which thinks highly of itself Zinnowitz can also come up with a promenade pier. It was built in 1993 and offers a noteworthy bathysphere at its end and a nice view of the sea and the houses at the beach. And like any other seaside resort on the island the municipality has got more guest beds (about 5000) than inhabitants (nearly 4000).
