Two important events at Peenemuende, which was first mentioned in a document of 1282, have gone down in world history:

Only some historians know that in 1630 troops of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf went ashore at Peenemuende intervening successfully in the Thirty Years´ War on the part of the Protestant League. Many people, on the other hand, know that the village was the site of an (in)famous rocket research centre between 1937 and 1945. The V2 missile, main product of this research centre, finally formed the basis of modern rocket technology. For this reason Peenemuende is also called the cradle of space travel. I do not say "is praised as", because one should not forget the suffering of the forced labourers at this place.

After World War 2 Peenemuende continued to be a military base until the early nineties. Naval forces of the communist German Democratic Republic were stationed in the harbour. After the fall of the GDR the village has been gradually rebuilt into a site of museums.

You will not find beautiful architecture nor art at Peenemuende. The village is rather an ugly dump, but myths and legends about the rocket research centre, remains of military architecture, and, last but not least, a lot of museums, among them the Historical Technical Information Centre, the Submarine and the Toy Museum, make Peenemuende one of the most interesting places on the island of Usedom.
