Heringsdorf, the second-oldest and most elegant seaside resort on the island of Usedom, was founded as a fishing village in 1818. Only 7 years later the first holidaymakers arrived marking

on the one hand the end of peace and seclusion in a typical sleepy Pomeranian village and
on the other hand the beginning of a new period: Until the eighties of the 19th century Heringsdorf finally developed into a luxurious and very popular holiday resort.

It would be going too far to list all the names of famous persons who visited Heringsdorf. Most of the well-heeled guests arrived from Stettin and Berlin, among them even two German emperors: Friedrich III. and Wilhem II. For this reason Heringsdorf is often called Imperial Seaside Resort, a designation which is not completely unjustified.

Many extravagant hotels, boarding houses and villas which were built in historicist and art noveau style before 1914 have been preserved and listed. Some people say that German seaside resort architecture culminated at Heringsdorf. To cut a long story short, it is a classy place. Other superlative pieces of architecture can be found at the beach: the modern promenade pier built and opened in the mid 1990´s is the longest one on the island of Usedom. It measures more than 500 metres in length. Opposite ther promenade pier there are also two huge tower blocks rising into the sky. They date from the former communist era and were built about 1980.
