Ahlbeck

Ahlbeck, having a population of about 4000 inhabitants, is not only one of the most beautiful and most elegant places on the island of Usedom, but also the eastern-most seaside resort of Germany. Poland and the town of Swinemuende are only a stone´s throw away from Ahlbeck. Being attracted by low prices many German tourists cross the border and visit a large outdoor market which extends right from the border to the town centre of Swinemuende.

Ahlbeck was founded about 1700. 150 years later the former fishing village finally started to become a holiday resort. It therefore belongs to the oldest seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea. Many famous people spent their holidays here,  even the former finance minister Theo Waigel trying to escape at this very place from the stress and strain of his thankless job at Berlin in 1997.

A lot of hotels, boarding houses and villas in Ahlbeck were built in historicist and art noveau style about 1900. For this reason the buildings are often tastefully decorated with small towers, oriels, pilasters, columns and balustrades lending the seaside resort a magnificent look.  A promenade pier, which is more than 300 m long, and its ancient entrance hall are the famous landmark of the holiday resort and even of the island of Usedom. However, most of the tourists arrive at Ahlbeck to enjoy the sandy and stoneles beach.
