Ahlbeck

The village of Zempin which was first mentioned in a document of 1571 has been a seaside resort since 1895. The yearly number of holidaymakers increased significantly when in 1911 Zempin, like many other places on Usedom, was connected to the railway network. Only the seaside resorts of Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf have had a rail connection to the mainland since 1894.

About 1000 people live in Zempin which is among the smallest seaside resorts on the island of Usedom. The village cannot even expand remarkably because it is situated on a  very narrow strip of land and nearly jammed between the Baltic Sea and a large lake called Achterwasser. For this reason it does not take much effort to get to the beach from any spot of the village.

Although Zempin almost entirely depends on tourism and holidaymakers, it does not look like a typical seaside resort, but rather like a sleepy farming and fishing village having no choice but to be a beautiful holiday resort. In the village centre there are more than 40 small thatched houses. The ancient wooden huts at the long and sandy beach where fish was salted in past times are also worth a visit.
