The former farming and fishing village of Ueckeritz is not located on the beach of the Baltic Sea, but on a lake called Achterwasser which is in fact a large indentation of the river Peene surrounded by the mainland and mostly by the island. The distance between this lake and the Baltic Sea is rather small: A 15 minutes walk through a forest will take you from the village to the long and sandy beach. If you prefer going by car there are also places to park next to the beach.

The village which was first mentioned in a document dated 1270 is surrounded by  a slightly hilly landscape consisting of forests, meadows and the lake Achterwasser. The first three holidaymakers to discover this beautiful place arrived in 1893. Their annual number increased significantly when in 1911 Ueckeritz was connected to the railway network. As the number of holidaymakers went up, so did the number of inhabitants: In 1900 only 400 people lived at Ueckeritz, today there are 1000 inhabitants.

Unlike the large seaside resorts on the island of Usedom, Ueckeritz has not spent money on building a promenade pier at its beach, but a fine view of the Baltic Sea from the steep coast and a broad and sandy beach definitely do compensate for this lack of luxury. Apart from that the village is definitely one of the most picturesque places on the island of Usedom.
