Would you like to spend your holidays at a seaside resort called sheep shed? 100 years ago the inhabitants of Hammelstall (=sheep shed) on the island of Usedom deeply feared that the name of their village would put off tourists from spending their holidays (and money) at this very place. For this reason they decided to rename Hammelstall into Trassenheide, a designation, which is in fact less off-putting. Thus the way was paved for the village in 1910 to become a small, but successful holiday resort.

When the village was founded in 1824, holidaymakers already arrived at other places on the island. Trassenheide is therefore one of the latest seaside resorts on Usedom. 26 years after the arrival of the first holidaymakers at the village, the whole northern part of the island including Trassenheide was declared a restricted zone of the rocket research centre at Peenemuende. That is why all the bathing seasons at the village were cancelled from 1936 until the end of World War 2.

Today Trassenheide is still a little village having a population of about 1000. The place does not offer you large hotels, luxurious boarding houses or villas that can be seen at Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck, Zinnowitz and Bansin. Most of the houses are one-storey, several of which are thatched. Sun worshippers will enjoy a large sandy beach which is not overcrowded even in summer.
