Apart from well-known seaside resorts and some towns several little villages are also located on Usedom. They can be found in a region called the islandīs hinterland. In fact, this countryside region comprises most parts of the island, or rather: all the places on Usedom which are not situated quite close to the Baltic Sea coastline. One of the most beautiful spots on the island can be seen in its northwestern hinterland: Offering large forests and a long steep coast near the village of Luetow Gnitz peninsula holds a great attraction for real nature lovers. So does a very old lime avenue that leads to the village of Krummin and its beautiful old church. Other places worth a visit are the villages of Ziemitz and Neeberg on the shore of the river Peene, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the steep coast of Gnitz peninsula.
The southeastern hinterland offers some scenic attractions, too. Concerning this there are two regions which in particular are worth being mentioned: The one is called Lieper Winkel peninsula, the other Usedomer Schweiz. Tourists will surely enjoy these amazing landscapes containing hills, lakes and several sleepy villages.
Among the most remarkable places of this region is also the
village of Mellenthin which has preserved its ancient rural
structures consisting mainly of an avenue and several adjacent buildings.
Lined by store houses and barns dating from the 19th century
this avenue leads from a noteworthy Renaissance castle to a
small gothic church. Other beautiful medieval churches can be
visited at the nearby villages of Benz,
Morgenitz, Zirchow and Liepe. There is also an ancient castle at
the village of Stolpe.
