Koserow lies at the bottom of a 60 m high hill called Streckelsberg on a narrow strip of land. It can be called the central holiday resort of Usedom, because the distance both to the eastern-most and to the western-most seaside resort amounts to almost 20 kilometres. Or to put it another way, the centre of the islandīs 40 km long and uninterrupted beach is located at Koserow.

Koserow first mentioned in a document of 1347 belongs to the most ancient settlements on Usedom. The small gothic church of the village dates from this early period. The old huts at the beach where fish was salted in former times have been another place of interest at Koserow since the first holidaymakers arrived in 1850. The number of tourists and inhabitants has greatly increased since then, turning Koserow from a small to a middle-sized seaside resort. Nevertheless, the place still looks rather like a sleepy picturesque village today.

Climbing the hill Streckelsberg is worth the effort, because there is a nice view of the Baltic sea, the long and broad beach and the promenade pier. The hill is among the highest elevations on the island and is also said to have been one of the most popular hideouts of an infamous pirate named Klaus Stoertebeker. However, this pirate story may only be a typical sailorīs yarn.
